The Nelson School of Music has a proud and long history of offering professional music tuition to the Nelson community. Please note that we are not a school in the sense that we “employ” teachers. Rather, we act as a link between music teachers and prospective students, offering a home base from which you can teach individuals or groups, plan lessons, practice, research, store instruments and socialize with colleagues.
Additional benefits of being an accredited teacher of the Nelson School of Music include:
- Association with one of New Zealand's leading private music schools.
- Promotion and marketing support.
- Student referrals.
- Discounted use of teaching studios & performance hall.
- Teacher Forums.
Your students will also be eligible to
- Participate in student concerts.
- Compete for annual Scholarships.
- Apply for fees assistance.
- Hire instruments.
We accredit teachers of the highest standards to deliver exceptional music education to students. Currently we have accredited teachers of piano, keyboard, theory, violin, viola, cello, guitar (classical & contemporary), percussion, recorder, pre-flute, flute, clarinet, voice, speech & drama, youth musical theatre, pre-school music, orchestra (youth & adult), guitar orchestra, junior and senior string ensembles. We are always happy to expand the range of available tuition and are currently experiencing a real shortage of violin teachers. Our students range in age from toddlers to 90 year-olds.
To apply to become an Accredited Teacher at the Nelson School of Music please fill out the form below. Your application will then be peer-reviewed by the Education Committee, which meets monthly. A committee member will then make contact with you to discuss your application, especially details of your previous teaching experience. All applicants will be police-checked (a legal requirement) prior to accreditation. Once background checks are completed, your accreditation will be ratified by the Board and you will receive an accreditation pack.
Cost of accreditation is $50 per year.
Please also note that, except in special circumstances, accredited teachers need to be domiciled in the Nelson/Tasman area, i.e., be available to teach local students.
