Individual music lessons

Individual lessons has been a principal activity of the School since opening. The Nelson School of Music has 60 accredited teachers offering the highest standard of tuition in a variety of instruments. We provide musical lessons to over 500 students annually. Music Lessons include theory and aural training and can be held in the school or sometimes at the music teachers home. Short term music lessons are available for specific occasions and Individual music lessons are available for personal advancement and enjoyment, or for preparation for examinations at all levels.

BRETT HOLLAND (Guitar and Bass Guitar )

Brett's guitar playing is well known in the region as he is the frontman for his own Mister Nobody jazz quintet which performed in the Nelson Jazz Festival 2010, as well as being hired for many national festivals and high profile events. Mister Nobody  have released a CD of modern jazz originals called "Over The Top" this year. Brett also performs on both guitar and bass, as well as vocals  for Nelson's the blues band Ubercat, which  launched at Winterfest 2090. Brett was guitarist for two iconic NZ musicians who performed in the region, Midge Marsden and Sharon O'Neill. Brett is also releasing a CD called Pieces Together with his original acoustic instrumentals in 2010. Brett  has been teaching more than 65 students  ranging in age from 7 - 55 per week for 3 years at Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology, Nelson College for Girls, Garin College and at his home studio, after 10 years' performing and teaching in Australia. He is a prolific song writer through many musical  mediums. Brett has studied with and toured with Tommy Emmanuel in several Australian tours. Brett's teaching serves to help musicians be well-rounded in playing for pleasure or performance.

REBECCA HOEKSEMA  (Folk, Popular Guitar)

Prior to moving to Nelson Rebecca taught guitar privately and at schools and with the Ministry of Education classes in the Horowhenua District.
Rebecca graduated from the Contemporary Music Performance Course
in 2007.

She enjoys teaching students from age five to adults in a variety of musical styles. Lessons include musical knowledge with an emphasis on performance.

Rebecca currently teaches beginner recorder and guitar classes at the NSOM.

MILES JACKSON (Classical Guitar, Flamenco Guitar)

Miles has been teaching and playing Classical Guitar professionally for over 30 years. During that time he helped found the New Zealand Federation of Classical Guitar Societies, of which he was President for five years. Miles has tutored at and directed many music schools and has been associated with the Nelson School of Music since 1981. His strongest quality is the teaching of technique. A priority for Miles is to bring students together to make music in enjoyable ensemble situations and to perform as often as possible. Besides training in Classical Guitar with some of the world’s great players and teachers, Miles continues to explore other music styles, and has made several trips to Spain to study Flamenco Guitar.

Cello

KATE SHERWOOD

Kate moved to New Zealand from the UK where she studied with James Tennant for five years. She began teaching during that time, moving to Nelson in 1996. Kate performs regularly with the Nelson Symphony Orchestra, the Nelson Chamber Orchestra, and the Nelson String Quartet. She teaches beginners through to Grade 7 cello.

DIPLOMA IN JAZZ STUDIES

Simon studied jazz at the Christchurch Institute of Technology. He commenced his music tuition on clarinet at the Nelson School of Music. He has performed with the Central Band of the RNZAF, big bands, rock and jazz combos. Simon has performed at the Eureka Jazz Festival in the USA with the Bourbon Street Beat band. Currently he is performing extensively with various groups within the Nelson region.

VERONICA STRUTHERS (Clarinet)

Veronica is a qualified, registered teacher at the primary and Early Childhood level and is currently working towards her ARSM in instrumental teaching of the clarinet. She teaches the beginners clarinet class at the NSOM and students from Girls College, St Josephs and Central Schools as well as privately from home. Veronica is a member of the Nelson Symphony Orchestra and an active member of their committee.

Drums & Percussion

CHRISTOPHER PIERSON

Chris is an experienced drum teacher and performer.  He commenced playing whilst at school and has playing professionally since 1986.  Chris has studied with David Jones at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, with Frank Gibson Jnr, Lance Philip, and John Taylor in London.  He has attended a host of drum clinics with international drummers such as Louis Bellson, Greg Bisonnette, Don Famulargo, Trilor Gurtu, and Elvin Jones.  Chris has toured with Tom Sharplin and the Cadillacs and is in constant demand as a drummer in the Nelson music scene. He is a drum tutor on the Contemporary Music Performance Course.

Joel began to learn flute at the age of twelve. At fifteen he began piano and continued to study both instruments.  This study culminated six years later in a Bachelor of Music Performance from Auckland University. Joel is currently the conductor of the Greenhill Training Orchestra.

SARA LEACH

Sarah is a trained Suzuki teacher. She has had extensive training from Julia Breen(Australia), Rebecca Paluzzi (USA) and Pandora Bryce (Canada).

Sarah enjoys teaching flute to students of all ages, from 5 years of

She currently teaches the beginners flute class at the Nelson School of Music.

Kathleen’s career as a teacher and pianist spans some 40 years. She has taught in numerous schools and colleges as well as privately. Several Nelson teachers have had tuition from her.

Kathleen's piano performances have included engagements with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, Nelson Symphony Orchestra and Radio Nelson.

HILDA BESTER  (Piano)

South African born Hilda studied Musical Pedagogics at the University of Stellenbosch. She has more than 20 years teaching experience, including classroom teaching (first as a music teacher and later as Head of Music) private music teaching and itinerant teaching.  She is also experienced in accompanying choirs and individuals. As she believes in an integrated approach to music, theory and ear training therefore form an essential part of a music lesson. She enjoys teaching students of all levels.

She is the local representative for the Royal Schools of Music and is a church organist. Marilyn enjoys teaching students from beginner to diploma level.

Margaret was born and educated in Lower Hutt where she learned ballet, violin, piano and singing. She began teaching piano at the age of sixteen and gained her ATCL (Teachers) in 1963 and her LTCL (Teachers) in 1964. JOE RIFICI  (Pop/Rock/Jazz Piano or Keyboards)

Joe has worked as a piano and keyboard performer, both solo and in bands since his teens. He earned a Bachelor's degree in Music and Theatre from Wagner College in New York. He has been a recording artist for RCA in Europe. Joe tutors in keyboard on the NSOM Contemporary Music Performance Course. He teaches practical skills, improvisation and popular styles geared to the wide audience, working with professional musicians as well as beginners, and especially those who would like to use the piano more freely as a creative medium to express their own personality in arrangement, improvisation and composition. Joe also teaches theory pertaining to all instruments.

Valerie started piano lessons at four and later had nine years broad musical education at the Royal Academy of Music, London.  She has been an accredited teacher at the Nelson School of Music for some 27 years.  She enjoys starting keen young beginners and teaches to Grade 8 level.  Lessons include theory and aural training and students are encouraged to play in public.  Valerie enjoys accompanying work and also plays and teaches oboe.

Virginia began her piano studies in Wellington and on moving to Nelson studied with Harold Colombatti and Kathleen Barnett. She gained her diploma and joined the teaching staff at the School. Virginia undertook further piano study in London with Bridgette Wild and back in Nelson with Thelma Robinson. Virginia enjoys teaching students at all levels. She also plays violin and viola, and is a member of the Nelson Symphony Orchestra.

JANET COOTE (Speech, Drama, Communication)

As an experienced actor and theatre practitioner Janet has been an accredited teacher at the Nelson School of Music since 1970.
She has also been a Speech/Language Therapist for the Special Education Service. Aspects of the spoken word are covered in order to equip the student for the demands of speech in life (e.g. interview situations).
Preparation is available for the NZ Speech Board and/or the Trinity College of London examinations covering poetry, public speaking, narration and acting skills.

Students are encouraged to enjoy literature and theatre.

Gaelynne graduated as a Speech and Drama teacher in 1986 and then traveled abroad, teaching in schools in the United Kingdom. Tuition is available for groups and individuals. Preparation is also available for those wishing to undertake exams. Gaelynne has worked extensively in all aspects of theatre and performs at local poetry readings. All ages are welcome.

Adele has many years of stage experience from Shakespearean plays to musicals, in Dunedin, Invercargill and Nelson. Individual lessons are available for personal advancement and enjoyment, and for preparation for examinations at all levels. Short-term lessons are available for specific occasions. Margaret Jackson (Violin & Viola)

Margaret has been a professional concert violinist for over 30 years, teaching, recording and performing throughout the world. She believes the highest function of education is to bring about an integrated individual who is capable of dealing with life as a whole. For Margaret teaching is an opportunity to awaken in the child the joy of music and the discovery of creativity. She regards each child as an individual with its own particular temperament. Margaret does not depend on any one method but prefers to mould the instruction to the needs of the pupil.

Dr. John Thomson (Violin & Viola)

Born in England, John Thomson moved to NZ where he studied violin with David Nalden.  He went to the USA in 1985 as a Fulbright Scholar and with a Queen Elizabeth II Scholarship to study violin with Robert Davidovici and to gain Masters and Doctoral degrees in Violin Performance.  He has also taken courses at the Julliard School and at Indiana University and was the first prize winner of the 1987 Fort Worth Concerto Competition.

Thomson has taught at several universities and has been at the University of South Dakota since 1994.    Several of his students have won prizes at competitions, and former students can be found throughout orchestras and teaching positions throughout the world.  Thomson is also in considerable demand as a conductor, and had led groups on both costs of the USA and throughout the Midwest.  Since 2002, Thomson has served as the Music Director of the Sioux Empire Youth Orchestras.  He has been several times featured in Who’s Who in America’s Teachers, most recently in 2006.

Tanya studied music in the UK at the Dartington College of Arts specializing in composition and Indian music. She also gained a postgraduate certificate in education at the University of Exeter. Tanya is an experienced violin teacher who believes music should be fun and enjoyable. Her main area of expertise lies within the 4 – 8 year old range.

DAWN OATEN  (Violin, Viola)

Dawn graduated from Auckland University with an Executant Diploma in Music, followed by study at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. She then joined the Scottish National Orchestra for eight years and later studied in London with Kato Havas. On returning to New Zealand she joined the School of Music staff and occasionally played with the Wellington Sinfonia and the Canterbury Trust Orchestra.

In 2003 Dawn was honoured with the award of Teaching Fellow at the
Nelson School of Music.

Jason Balla  (Vocal)

M.A. (oxon), G.S.M.D.

Jason was born in Wales, UK and gained his Master of Arts Degree in Music from Oxford University, England where he was awarded the prestigious organ scholarship at Balliol College. After Oxford he continued his vocal and opera studies at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London and also in Europe with singers and teachers such as Carlo Bergonzi and Nicolai Gedda.

He has performed throughout Europe, N. America and Asia in recital, oratorio, concert and opera. As a company member of Lyric Opera of Chicago Jason has sung in over 1000 performances with some of the top opera singers, conductors and directors in the profession. He has sung in over 60 operatic productions with singers such as Kiri Te Kanawa, Placido Domingo, and Renee Fleming with conductors such as Zubin Mehta, Sir George Solti and Jesus Lopez-Cobos, and directors including Peter Sellars, Sir John Cox and and Sir Peter Hall.

Jason enjoys teaching and coaching classical/operatic repertoire as well as the lighter concert and Broadway styles. As a keyboard player, both piano and organ, Jason accompanies and coaches both singers and pianists as well as enjoying choral directing and conducting.

Bringing (from Russia, St Petersburg, Belarus, Minsk & USA, Texas & Colorado) her more than 30 years overseas experience in concert performances, University Lecturing, Musicology, music therapy and programme production, Natasha suggests different vocal techniques, varying from classic Italian bell-canto to contemporary membrane-resonance talking-toning-singing methods of voice developing and performing.

Gillian has extensive experience as a performer in a wide range of musical styles. For several years she was a solo recitalist for the Radio New Zealand Concert Programme and has performed as both soloist and chorister with many Auckland choirs and ensembles including the Opera New
Zealand Chorus.

Pamela studied with Astra Desmond (Lady Nearne) and Flora Neilson at the Royal Academy of Music, London, and lieder at Convent Garden. She has also studied with Hilda Beal and Ilse Wolf at Morley College, and with Lola Rodrigues and Felix Lavilla in Madrid.  She has broadcast many concerts in Europe and has twice been a place getter in the Mobil Song Quest. Pamela has been a vocal tutor at the Nelson School of Music since 1984, providing both individual and group tuition.

JOE RIFICI  (Pop/Rock/Jazz vocals, Therapeutic Breath and Voicework)

BA Music & Theatre (Wagner College, New York City)

Joe’s vocal training and musical career encompasses a broad range of styles and contexts. Classically trained in New York he has held principal singer/actor roles in the Broadway cast of the hit musical Grease and in other rock musicals on national tours of the USA. He has worked as a pop recording artist signed to RCA Records in Europe and has recorded extensively as a studio session vocalist on record, video and commercial jingle dates.

In addition to his work with bands he has had 15 years of experience as a solo performer (vocal/keyboards) and has trained as a recording engineer.
Formerly head of vocal and song writing programmes at the School of Creative Musicianship (SCM) in Auckland and instructor with the Voice Works Institute in Los Angeles, he has also taught music in public schools and for three years was Principal Tutor of the Nelson School of Music’s
CMPC course.

He teaches a practical and concrete vocal technique geared to pop/rock/jazz and other modern genres but applicable to any style. Prevention of injury and maintenance/recovery of a vital, healthy vocal instrument are emphasised. In the last several years, Joe has been studying psychotherapy, both formally and informally, and now offers and incorporates cutting-edge therapeutic Breath and Voicework in his teaching, where appropriate, to those who desire a different preliminary approach to removing barriers to free expression.

Jane commenced vocal studies with Pam Sims and then studied with Luisa Shannahan, Vernon Midgley, Juliet Midgely and Elric Hooper at NASDA, (Christchurch College of Education) where she gained the Bachelor of Performing Arts degree in singing and dramatic art. She is a practicing professional singer working extensively around the Nelson region. Jane has had singing and dancing roles in a number of musical productions including “Little Voice”, “City of Angels”, “Trial by Jury”, ”Guys and Dolls”, “Anything Goes”, “Chicago” and “Me and My Girl”. She recently performed at the Eureka Jazz Festival in the USA with the Bourbon Street Beat band.
