The annual Scholarship competitions are one of the highlights of the student calendar. Held in September each year, they encourage our young musicians to strive for excellence, work towards a performance goal, and be critiqued by an expert adjudicator. The Scholarship competition also offers students a valuable performance opportunity in an authentic setting and supports their preparation for external exams and NCEA assessments. Of course, for Scholarship winners, their monetary prizes help considerably with tuition fees.
Interestingly, although competition is sometimes frowned upon in the performing arts world, our Scholarship event is embraced by both teachers and students. In 2016, we had 130 students competing in 32 different categories, from Speech and Drama through to Instrumental and Vocal, catering for beginners to experienced musicians. All students receive participation certificates and an adjudicator’s report. Winners receive a monetary prize and a certificate.

Scholarships awards are generally $100 per class, generously sponsored by local businesses, individuals, and from funds held in trust from bequests. The School of Music is extremely grateful for these donations.
The 2017 Scholarships will take place on Friday 15th & Saturday 16th of September at Old St John’s Church & Hall. Our adjudicators for Vocal & Instrumental categories are Nick Sharpe & Anna Maitland, and for Speech & Drama is Mel Stewart.
