Contemporary Music Course
Course Aims

The aims of this course are:
To provide students with a basic grounding in a wide range of skills which will assist them to pursue a career in the popular/commercial music world.
To enhance each student’s ability to play a musical instrument in a range of popular/contemporary music styles.
To provide students with the skills and experience needed to perform confidently in public.
To provide students with a supportive environment for music performance.
To encourage students to adopt and display a professional manner in all aspects of their work.
To provide students with personal support services and any other assistance in order to help them make the best use of time at the School.
To promote the Nelson School of Music as a centre of contemporary music as well as classical music.
To increase public awareness of the level and range of skills needed to perform contemporary music in a professional manner.
To promote contemporary music as a performing art.
 

COURSE OUTCOMES

By the end of this course all students will have:

Demonstrated an improvement in their ability to play at least one instrument in a variety of popular/contemporary music styles.

Demonstrated ability to perform in a band.
Performed in public on several occasions.
Composed and performed their own musical compositions / songs.
Accurately set up and operated a P.A. system.
Demonstrated an understanding of digital audio and video processes.
Displayed an increased knowledge in music theory and notation.
Demonstrated through analysis a sound knowledge of contemporary music styles.
Demonstrated a knowledge of the NZ music industry.
